The program I am working with.. Takes homeless people who have used drugs and/or alcohol in the last 30 days.. and pays for them to go to treatment. Once they have successfully completed that.. they come live at the shelter for about 6 months and work the program there.. attend meetings and such. They are required to go look for a job. We pay for their first months rent. give them a one month bus pass.. and like any good momma bird.. gently
I do very intensive case management.. Meaning.. yeah I am THE bug up their ass about stuff.. Part of my job is helping them obtain what they need.. so many people ( as I was one of them) in that position need so many things that most take for granted. Do you have a drivers license.. birth certificate.. social security card.. Would you know how to replace all those without spending money? Without transportation to go do that? It seems like these souls are overwhelmed at the tasks of just putting together the foundation that will be firm enough to allow them to rebuild their lives.
I am very blessed.. I am very grateful.. and I WILL make a difference, if just to one heart..
